Ok, here's a quick guide about launching attacks.
1. Find the slowest carrier in your list
2. Go to the last menu
Server time is the current time
ETA : use the time for your carrier to make it to the planet
3. Set the ETA time for all carriers you launch to within 0-5 min (explained in 4)
Start with your slowest carrier first since this will give you the time to set the rest
4. Make sure all your carriers arrive within 15 min of the first one to arrive and ensue that they will make it in to the attack, since there is a 15 min gathering time
Use the slider on the last menu screen to adjust the ETA time
This is why setting all to arrive with in 0-5 min is the best. All carriers attacking will sync up once they reach the planet and are in gathering.
Lots of people call the ETA time TOT, that is "Time On Target." Otherwise ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) is normally used or even simply "attack time."
6. When attacking as a group, setting the ETA time close to each other is the most important as you want to make sure ever one gets in on the attack.
If you have anymore question feel free to ask any Commander.

Question: if you have 3 carriers, arriving at the same time, each with a 7% attack bonus from red artefacts, does that mean a total of 21% bonus, or do the bonuses only apply to the ships attached to carriers with the artefact?

The bonus only apples to the ships on the carrier.

Do you need a scanner array to detect incoming attacks?
